6 Days in Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California

Saturday, October 18 - Thursday, October 23, 2008

Sponsored by the Valley Wide Kayak Club

Join us on this fantastic adventure down the Baja peninsula on the Sea of Cortez.

The journey on Highway 1 starts out along the beautiful Pacific Ocean coast, then turns inland through the mountains and becomes unique cactus country.

The huge Cardon cacti and strange Cirio "Boojum" trees are really unique to this area and create a stunning contrast to the beautiful blue of the Sea of Cortez.

We will camp on the beach north of town for 6 days/5 nights, doing day paddles in the morning before the wind comes up.

In the mornings with no wind, the water is smooth as glass and crystal clear. Paddling along the rocks is like being in an aquarium with all the fish and aquatic plants.

The warm water temperatures make swimming and snorkeling an added pleasure.

In the afternoons, if the wind comes up there is lots to do.

We will visit the sea turtle research station and a wonderful museum with hands-on exhibits showing the natural history of the area. It holds a full skeleton of a whale, a complete collection of seashells, photos of nearby cave paintings, and many assorted animal pelts, skeletons and photos.

Another day, with a 4-wheel-drive vehicle we will discover an ancient Indian cliff painting site and visit the historic San Borja mission, at different times inhabited by the Jesuits, Franciscans and Dominicans.
